Agnes NKhata

I met this wonderful lady in this DC early this year, I must say she is an amazing individual and Im glad I can call her my friend.Look out for her and the many projects she is involved in..Here is a piece she wrote
Facebook her!!!

Message To My Brothas written December 2007
next time you step to me,
step respectfully.
maybe the burden between those legs
got you thinkin sideways, in a daze
brainwashed for the lack of appreciation for this sista
sounds like you're too big for your own boots
I am not the skanky image that you've been fed
on and on we are dehumanized,
rather than being praised for our place in this world
called by life itself, i am women
knowing the history of my gender,
In the forefront of your mind should be
the kind of words that i appreciate
equal,divine, worthy, empress
give me the respect that YOUR
mamas grandmamas
worked so hard for,
sweatin in the picket lines for a voice to match yours
poundin maze so your ancestor slaves could eat
seneca falls with hearts so heavy just longing to belong
to be revered as Equivalent
yet still, after all that
some are blind to a womens worth.
think twice next time you step to me
or dont step at all

Peaceful Comrad Agnes NKhata

Spotlight: Mia Nakano

By Julianne Ong Hing (Redefining Queer/Asian/Female)

When Mia Nakano worked as a photojournalist in Nepal, she observed workshops intended to educate people in the countryside about queer, but primarily lesbian, identities. “I would ask [the facilitators], ‘How do you define the word?’ And every person gave me a different answer,” Nakano recalled. Her questions sparked a debate. Translators argued over terms and interpretations.

Nakano, who is based in the San Francisco Bay area, began wondering about the language people use to define themselves, especially when it comes to race, gender and sexual orientation. And thus, the Visibility Project was born.

Along with collaborator Christine Pan, Nakano has photographed more than 40 people to create a collective portrait of female, trans and gender queer Asian Americans. The series is also tied to surveys and films that document people’s struggles to define their identities beyond a butch/femme dichotomy or an Asian/non-Asian split. The Visibility Project explores the relationships between who we are, what we see and the language we use to describe all of it along the way.

But Nakano had other motives too. “Most of the material on Asian-American queer folks is very intellectualized, heady theses projects that aren’t accessible,” she said. There was always so much text, but never the faces of the people featured in the writing. The Visibility Project was Nakano’s response to that, too—the chance to empower a community to speak for themselves.

...

His morning calls were like a cup of Café Cubano
Sweet, strong, powerful
His taste still lingers in my mouth
No longer did alarm clocks had a necessity in my life
His hands gave me a sense of time

Y el hera un hombre con apellido bonito
His uniqueness and positive vibe
Created a possibility for me to fall in love

Pushing out broken Spanish
“Buenos dias and have a buen day” out his mouth
Speaking spanglish to my family
His way of charming them
And it worked
Cuz even mi abuela began to like him

And just like that we fell in love in two languages

And I recall this early morning
Where he jotted down in his Iphone the exact time we said “I love you” to each other
I sat in my living ,sinking in more and more into my couch
Sinking down the idea of possibly being in love

Within 3 weeks me and him talked about having 8 kids lol
He would tell me the adventures he plans to embark as an archeologist
Always assuring me that I will be there with him

We will be side by side
Climbing pyramids
researching the black whole
and even the Bermuda triangle was not out of the question

As silly as it sounded, I remember thinking
“word baby, I will be there even if we get lost or enter some 3rd word dimension, I WILL be there”
No hesitation

He read me his wedding vowels
(and we were not even engaged)
He shared w/ me his deepest secrets
He told me he was scared of ghosts and black cats lol

He altered my life,
He impacted me spiritually
He was my first love

Y el hera un hombre con un appellido bonito
But everything eventually comes to an end
And our love eventually die-d

Post-Racial...dont bring up the "R" word

After this comment , Obama kinda apologized for using the word "stupidly" and even called the officer. I give him props for acknowledging the fact that it is a matter of racism..but i see that it is still a touchy subject to even be discussed by the President...I really think he should go all in and discuss it, its about time for such discussion.

Something about old skool style...

Terrence Howard has that old skool essence..I find it very interesting and I digg it. His voice can put me through sleep(I mean it in a good way)

She does it again..

I have not yet had the privilege to meet Lady Pink but her art speaks for itsel....

Visualizin the realism of life and actuality

"...Even though, we know somehow we all gotta go
but as long as we leavin thievin we'll be leavin with some kind of dough
so, and to that day we expire and turn to vapors
me and my capers-ll be somewhere stackin plenty papers
Keepin it real, packin steel, gettin high
Cause life's a bitch and then you die

Life's a bitch and then you die; that's why we get high
Cause you never know when you're gonna go...

I woke up early on my born day, I'm twenty years of blessing
The essence of adolescent leaves my body now I'm fresh in
My physical frame is celebrated cause I made it
One quarter through life some God-ly like thing created.."

I was deadass singing along to this Nas track while doing my morning run..ppl was looking at me like i was crazy. I mean its Illmatic , no one cant resist spittin them lines in them tracks...
But def. cleared my mind for today. Many ideas came to mind, so expect the unexpected for this rest of the year---

I heard this song in a remix Drake did, and then heard it again in one of Charles Hamiltons song...I must say I def. love this Sweden singer..her song Tonight is dope too ..check out the video for her A lil bit song....

Hands down
I'm too proud, for love
But with eyes shut
It's you I'm thinking of
But how we move from A to B it can't be up to me
Cause I don't know
Eye to eye
Thigh to Thigh
I let go

I think I'm a little bit
Little bit

A little bit in love with you
But only if you're a little bit
Little bit
Little bit
In lalalala love with me
Oh ah

The miseducation of Texas by Michelle Chen.....

President Obama stressed the importance of embracing history when he spoke of standing on the shoulders of giants this week at the NAACP convention. But in Texas, historical consciousness is imperiled in a debate over what to teach the state’s public school students.

Randy Shaw reports in Beyond Chron:

The Texas State Board of Education is moving toward removing Cesar Chavez and Thurgood Marshall from the social studies curriculum taught to its 4.7 million public school students. According to one of the six “expert reviewers” revising the 1997 curriculum, Chavez “lacks the stature, impact and overall contributions of so many others; and his open affiliation with Saul Alinsky’s movements certainly makes dubious that he is praiseworthy.” Another reviewer concluded that Marshall, a Supreme Court justice who as an attorney argued the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case, is “not an appropriate example as a historical figure of influence.”

We all need change right???

Its amazes me how its about to be a month since I turned 20..I told myself I will embark in some changes and well for the most part I have made them. No longer am I a teen, no longer am I that Sonia...I am now SONIA. I def. have accomplish so much this year but the work is not over yet...personal work is still to be done...

I have goals and dreams--thus far I have accomplish some and Im in the process of accomplising others...I will always be a dreamer and I will not stop till i execute all my goals..

Body, mind and soul are keys in a happy life...I have always put all 3 last. I have devoted myself on work, school, ppl, friends...not that is a bad thing but I think there should be a balance. Me comes first....and I have to take care of myself all the times and not just weekends when I can squeeze in some sleep lol...Lifstyles have been changed (I dont know if ya have noticed)..There have been plenty moments when I felt guilty that I been ghost: missing events, not returning text and calls(well I have no phone), and not being able to spend time with my friends...but at the end of the day I remind myself that I need it to be this way right now. Yes , old cliche "she needs time for herself, she is finding herself"..well I have found myself, all of this has been me trying to keep her and keeping her sane. I am not doing this for ya, Im doing this for me.

It hasnt been easy, ppl confusing my ghost status as me being a bad friend, or me being "to good to hang out w/" or "a bad relationship partner"...Im deeply sorry if I have made ppl feel like I left them in the dark but I hope my true friends and true ppl comprehend and dont hold grudges against me or turn their back on me...I have always been a beliver that theres good in ppl and always seing the good in them..and I still do

I been trying to find myself in others, trying to find happyness in others, trying to find love in others, when the key thing is that I can find them in me...All I can do is follow my own tracks and as scary as the future may seem, as new and different these paths Im taking are I will continue to take them..I always been a optimistic person, and I always believed in me, and believed at the end of the tunnel there is a bright light. Yes I will fall, and make mistakes here and there but thats me being human, but I do kno I will get up and hold my head high....

Change is key and I was reminded that CHANGE sometimes is needed when talking to my dear friend Troy. (If you ever get to read this blog Troy, Thank you for walking into my life---as cheesy as it sounds I appreciate your friendship)...I recall the first time talking to you, you told me your whole life story lol..in like less than 45 minutes I knew things from your childhood, learned how funny and corny you can be , and how you love sneakers, I remember you telling me about how dope I am lol....shit I think the reason I use dope in my daily vocabulary is bcuz of you :)
Since then we exchanged views on diff. things from our point of views about life, to about relationships, to our own futures.

Troy, you went ghost of me. I kno many ppl would have gotten mad that you hadnt hit them up but I understood where you were coming from. I understood the absence and I understood where this yearn for a need for change came from. I guess we always been on the same page. Although you wear sneakers and I wear pumps, although you cut your hair and I'm letting mine grow, although your corny and Im funny lol, although we kinda had diff. experiences growing up,at the end of the day I feel like you and I will always be in the same page. For the past few days, you have been on the other line putting up with my DC updates and you was there a few month ago when my aunt gave birth(funny how u called me to tell me your sister gave birth on that week too) ...but anyway when you went ghost on me and when you updated me a few weeks ago that you might be moving away cuz Ny was not working for u..I was sad cuz I felt like I will be losing out on a great friend. Shit I will be losing out on a great graphics designer lol, I will be missing out on a person I can depend on being up at 3 am and a person who leaves crazy comments on my pic such as : "you have the cutest chin i ever seen " lol....man I knew i would be losing on TROY , the dopest dude I will ever know, the amazing individual whom I always say "your amazing" to.....

But I kno we will somehow and someway keep in touch even if you move to Iowa, you reassured me that that is how it will be.Thank you for reassuring me that although taking steps for them changes we need in our life can be scary, it needs to be done and we can just hope for the best. Thank you and def. you are an amazing individual.I wish I could have done more for you, for you have done so much for me. I told you a few nights ago " I see great potential in you, I know you will do great things" ---trust i meant that.

So like the title in this blog initialy said " might be the last blog"...I guess it may be the last one for now.But I changed it to "we all need change right?" Hey maybe for the next time I will have an update on how I cut my hair short .well we will never know or maybe we wil..lets see how I embrace these changes...time will tell..

Thanks Mr.Troy , remember to smile lol and remember your amazing.(PS--your a prototype of what my husband could have been lol )

Women problems eh? lol

I dig their style, and def. love the fact they are real artist ..they are dope

Pretty wings...

In many ways this song makes sense....

Time will bring the real end of our trial
One day there'll be no remnants no trace
No residual feelings within ya
One day you won't remember me.

Your face will be the reason I smile
But I will not see what I cannot have forever
I'll always love ya
I hope you feel the same.
If I can't have you
Let love set you free
To flap your pretty wings around.

I turned day into night
Sleep till I die a thousand times
I should have showed you better nights, better times, better days
And I miss you more and more--You kno I love you Steven

Weekend plans???

YES im back...so much to blog...

Im back------ I am not planning no more trips to DC gotta, focus on my NY lifestyle. But I must say whole lot of changes here and there;will blog about my 2 trips to Dc that I did in the past two weeks....but for starters let me start by saying its New York International Latino Film Festival
Here is a movie that is a must go see..

NEW YORK PREMIERE of “THE LEAST OF THESE”
A Documentary on Family Detention,
American Values, and the Power of Community Activism
Wednesday July 29, 2009, 8:30 PM

Clearview Cinemas Chelsea (260 West 23rd Street)
Tickets $12 (Click HERE for advance purchase)
Q&A following the screening featuring Vanita Gupta (ACLU), Michelle Brané (Women's
Refugee Commission), and directors Clark Lyda and Jesse Lyda
-The Least of These takes a penetrating look at the T. Don Hutto Residential Center, a former medium-security prison that re-opened in 2006 as a prototype family detention center. The facility houses immigrant children and their parents from all over the world who are awaiting asylum hearings or deportation proceedings. As information about troubling conditions at the facility began to leak out, three activist attorneys (Vanita Gupta, Michelle Brané, and Barbara Hines of the University of Texas School of Law) sought to investigate and address the issues. In telling the story of their quest, the film explores the role and limits of legal and community activism in bringing about change. The film leads viewers to consider how core American rights and values – presumption of innocence, the protection of children, upholding the family structure as the basic unit of civil society, and America as a refuge of last resort – should apply to immigrants, particularly children.

“…This quiet and measured documentary about the history of Hutto doesn’t paint ICE or management firm Corrections Corporation of America as the bad guys. Instead, it shows them as victims of their own political and commercial hubris and highlights the bleak comedy of their attempts to justify a bad idea. But as the interviews with traumatized kids, parents disabused of the American dream, and the lawyers that fight for them show, it doesn’t matter how many Disney murals you paint on the walls – a prison is a prison.”
— Austin Chronicle

"Powerful and moving... a film about a fight for social justice that forced change..."

- Mark Steiner, WEAA, Baltimore

My request...

His Request
He wanted to know if I might
consider penciling love
into my day planner

he asked if I would be his wife
if i might want to be loved
if i might need to be held
in between appointments

By Toni Blackman
_____________________________________________________________________________________

In respose to his request

Funny thins is that I accepted his request, I pencil in love into my day planner..
He asked if I would be his wife, and I said yes
If i might want to be loved, and I told him I love him
And he promised to hold me in between appointments

His request, as promising as it may have been was all lies

I was never included in his daily planner
Asking me to be his wife, when he was not ready to be my husband
He wanted to be loved, he said he loved me but actions speaks louder than words
and his actions screams "I never really loved u"

And so now my daily planner is full with appointments that are worth my time,
and his appointments have been erased out my life

This is a great example of being yourself...

Taz Arnold

“A rainbow and color is natural and has nothing to do with someone’s sexual preference. It’s fucking ridiculous. The rainbow is for gay people, straight people, people who don’t have sex, kids, animals, everything.” If you’ve seen photos of Taz, you know that anything goes, and lack of color is not an option. “A guy won’t wear shorts above his knees because he’s scared of what people think. Like who the fuck dresses for other people? Why are you spending all this money so that you can look like somebody else?” Puzzled and passionate, Arnold settles for a minute to regain his composure and then softly stakes his claim. “The main thing is this - I’m taking the rainbow back.”

Can I be your??

MR HUDSON [FEAT KANYE WEST] - SUPERNOVA from MrHudson on Vimeo.

You Deserve Some Me Time! By Simone Kelly-Brown

Great thing to read and practice( taken from thebloomeffect.com)

DO IT FOR YOURSELF! YOU DESERVE THOSE GUILT FREE MOMENTS. We need, recovery, reflection, goal assessment time, and the ability to say no! Here’s a check list to help you create some of your own “Me Time Rituals.”

1. Tap into yourself EVERY DAY: Meditate, pray, chant or say an affirmation…whatever works for you spiritually can serve as a great relaxation tool. Even if for just five minutes, make the effort!

2. Take energizing breaks. If time or money doesn’t permit you to take a full-fledged vacation, then escape to a location close to home for a weekend retreat. Make sure people call you only for an emergency.

3. Treat yourself to a day-spa for some pampering. A massage or facial will always do the trick! Can’t afford it? You can do it at home with some friends.

4. You can also do something as simple as going to your public library or book store. Browse the travel section, photography books or fiction. Peruse anything that lets your mind go on a mini-vacation.

5. Take a news fast and don’t read or watch the news for a day or two.

6. Take a walk in the park and bring a book and just relax. (Non-work related reading only guys!)

Don’t turn your focus away from what is truly important. Instead, learn to measure your success by the balance and happiness you achieve in your life on a whole. I wish you luck in achieving that life that you want and need!

So recession has ultimately gotten to Sonia...def. being an actvisit, artist, and Dream Act advocate doesnt pay my bills---lol I always said I wont ever get a job cuz I want a career. And I still uphold to that...

Although my phone is off (verizon is waiting for a $690 payment) , had to book a Boltbus for my two upcoming trips to DC, havent updated my closet, I'm all out of paint, I cant purchase some tickets to hear Cornell speak, even though metrocards are taking all my money, and I'm almost all done with my Mac lipgloss..I still uphold to that. I love what I do, yes it may not pay me trillion of $$ but I dont do what I do for money. Bills need to get paid, and I need to maintain myself but things work out somehow I will make some money but not in exhange of my values and what I love to do.....
