‘The Garden’ Sows Seeds of Struggle ---Dope documentary

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.

But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers:

Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value? Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council? Why has it never been made public?

And the powers-that-be have the same response: “The garden is wonderful, but there is nothing more we can do.”

If everyone told you nothing more could be done, would you give up?

* * *

The Garden has the pulse of veritĂ© with the narrative pull of fiction, telling the story of the country’s largest urban farm, backroom deals, land developers, green politics, money, poverty, power, and racial discord. The film explores and exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

NY STATE COURT HALTS HUNTER COLLEGE'S PROPOSED CHILDCARE CUTS

NY STATE COURT HALTS HUNTER COLLEGE'S PROPOSED CHILDCARE CUTS

Press Contacts: Leanne Tory- Murphy (516) 458- 3454 Luz Schreiber (917) 628-9751
defendhunterchildcare@gmail.com

December 21, 2009 -- At around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, the New York State Supreme Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) that will prevent Hunter from starting construction planned during the holiday break to convert one of the four classrooms of the college's Children's Learning Center (CLC) to administrative offices. The announcement came as over 75 Hunter students with children and their supporters rallied at the college.
A video of the announcement:

Korima, a mother who uses the center, said, "Today was a success. The people we wanted to hear us not only heard us, but they saw us, and importantly, thanks to another member staying in court the judge ruled in our favor!"

The lawsuit was filed this afternoon by Hunter student-parents Luz Schreiber and Angela Molfetas on behalf of Hunter parents and their children, seeking to stop the college from cutting back the CLC's quality childcare services.

Molfetas - who was in the room when the order was signed - said of the decision, "Today I got the opportunity to see a glimpse of justice. I am heartened by the judge's decision to temporarily cease the construction. I hope that this is one step on the way to well-promoted childcare services that enable parents to access higher education."

The peaceful afternoon rally was marked by aggression on the part of campus police. When some demonstrators moved to take their concerns inside, where the Dean of Student Services, Eija Ayravainen - a defendant in the lawsuit - stood watching, campus police roughly shoved the group, which included mothers and their children, into the entry ways and prevented them from entering the building. One person was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, as well as apparent riot charges. His case is pending.
A video of police interactions with students:

The TRO will prevent CUNY and Hunter from reassigning Room 209 for use for any purpose other than childcare or undertaking any construction for the purpose of preparing Room 209 for any purpose other than childcare until the student-parents can be heard by the court at 4:00 p.m. on January 21, 2010 in Part 17 at 60 Centre Street. The student-parents and their children are represented by Gideon Orion Oliver and Ronald B. McGuire.

Student-parents and their supporters have opposed the taking of Room 209 for administrative purposes since the decision was announced during the last week of classes last May. They say Hunter should be expanding, not cutting back, these services, and that the administration has tried to cover up the losses of services that will result from the planned cuts. Their campaign has found a broad array of support from CUNY students and staff, including the Professional Staff Congress, CUNY's staff union and has received letters of support from New York City Council Higher Education Committee members Charles Barron and Ydanis Rodriguez.

Raab initially refused to meet with student-parents and their children, and Dean Ayravainen called Hunter's on-site childcare a "luxury". In response, Mr. Barron declared, "Childcare is not a luxury, it is a necessity for struggling working families and students at CUNY. Maintaining and expanding childcare services should be a priority at Hunter College."

Copies of the court papers are available upon request.

Background:
For 26 years, the Children's Learning Center has provided high-quality, affordable childcare to Hunter students with children. The proposed childcare cuts run counter to Hunter's tradition of supporting women's education and serving a student body representative of the diversity of New York City. Almost 1 in 10 Hunter students are parents.

Since June, a petition to save Room 209 has garnered over 3,000 signatures. In October, a majority of the Hunter Senate voted against cuts to childcare space and services.

Many of the teachers at the CLC are graduates of Hunter's renowned School of Education. Yet, the educational services and childcare provided at the CLC have been chronically under-promoted. "It saddens me to see that this administration is diminishing this model program, as opposed to upholding and promoting it for the precious gem that it is," declared Charlotta Nutley at today's rally. Nutley is a Hunter student and mother of two daughters who currently attend the CLC.

Go tell it --Mahina Movement

mahina movement Pictures, Images and Photos
Go Tell It
lyrics & music by Gabriella Callender and vaimoana litia makakaufaki niumeitolu

Go tell it in Brooklyn
On the roof tops
And everywhere
Go tell it in Brooklyn
That we are still alive

Go tell it in Washington
At the Pentagon
And everywhere
Go tell it in Washington
That we are still alive

Go tell it around the world
Across the seas and everywhere
Go tell it around the world
That we are still alive

And we ainĂt gonna stop until the last person dies
Until she cant move or breathe or open her eyes
Cause weĂll never accept the truth as lies
And if we have to fight for peace
WeĂre not afraid to fight, fight, fight

Fight until thereĂs no breath to breathe
No breath to speak
No sight to see
Til the last heartbeat for you and me
And we wont stop fighting til the break of dawn
As we get our revolution on and on and on

DonĂt you get it, it canĂt stop wonĂt stop
like hip hop
back in the day some did say and pray it would go away
Hell No!
but oh baby itĂs here to stay
so

Go tell it
On the mountain
That itĂs here to stay
I said go tell it on the mountain
That weĂre here to stay
Go tell it
On the mountain
That weeeeeee are still alive!

Good morning ... you graduate when you make it up outta the streets

Wake up, Mr. West, Mr. West, Mr. Fresh
Mr. by-his-self-he-so-impressed
I mean, damn, did you even see the test
You got D's mother fucker, D's, Rosie Perez
And yes, barely pass any and every class
Looking at every ass
Cheated on every test
I guess this is my dissertation
Homie, this shit is basic
Welcome to graduation

Good morning
Look at the valedictorian scared of the future
While I hop in the Delorean
Scared-to-face-the-world complacent career student
Some people graduate, but we still stupid
They tell you read this, eat this, don't look around
Just peep this, preach us, teach us, Jesus
Okay, look up now, they done stole your streetness
After all of that, you receive this

My body is my temple

“ Here in this body are the sacred rivers: here are the sun and moon as well as all the pilgrimage places… I have not encountered another temple as blissful as my own body Saraha (Tibeten poet)via: melodysblog

Dope--Saul Williams

“ Fear is the cheapest room in the house. Hafiz

"Have you ever lost yourself in a kiss? I mean pure psychedelic inebriation. Not just lustful petting but transcendental metamorphosis when you became aware that the greatness of this being was breathing into you. Licking the sides and corners of your mouth, like sealing a thousand fleshy envelopes filled with the essence of your passionate being and then opened by the same mouth and delivered back to you, over and over again - the first kiss of the rest of your life. A kiss that confirms that the universe is aligned, that the world's greatest resource is love, and maybe even that God is a woman. With or without a belief in God, all kisses are metaphors decipherable by allocations of time, circumstance, and understanding"
— Saul Williams (Said the Shotgun to the Head)

"They say that I am a poet
I wonder what they would say if they saw me from the inside I bottle
emotions and place them into the sea for others to unbottle on
distant shores I am unsure as to whether they ever reach and for
that matter as to whether I ever get my point across
or my love"
— Saul Williams

"intelligence is intuitive
you needn't learn to love
unless you've been taught
to fear and hate"
— Saul Williams (," said the shotgun to the head)

I never write fairy tales nor sad stories..I write my reality

"I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best."

“I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality.”

Undocumented ...not illegal

Justice Sotomayor Uses The Word “Undocumented” In Supreme Court Case Decision

"We all know that the derogatory phrase “illegal immigrant” carries with it hateful and racist connotations, and Justice Sotomayor’s move to eschew that kind language won’t go unnoticed. It’s the small victories, people, small victories.

Now if only we could convince President Obama to give up the phrase, too."

How many sheeps can I count so that I can fall asleep...

For the past couple of nights I been having trouble sleeping..Insomnia? could be. Fear? Maybe. Tired? Yes, of the world. I think i been swimming in a pool of insecurities (and btw I cant swim). I figure having someone next to me ( my fiancée) would calm me, I would feel secure. However, as he sleeps , I'm wide awake. I'm not blaming him or holding anything against him. I am here stating that I need to feel comfortable with my own skin and initiate my own calmness and security.....Another night has come and I am up. Its near 2 am and sleep doesn't seem like my best friend at this time. All I can do is try to swim out of this pool of fears and negativity. But I know this is another night where I will drown once again.....

I admit I have trouble sleeping at nights...I guess the little kid in me is still scare of this dark world

I admit I wish the scary monsters under my bed would come out and show their face, because for so long they been hiding their real hideous appearance under pretty masks.

I admit that makes me not trust people.

I admit the thunder outside my window is not as loud as the noises in my head; these insecurities are blasting music in my eardrums.

I admit I am cold even if I have my favorite blanket covering me. Something is pulling my feet, something is creeping from the foot of my bed.Something isn't right. Maybe its just me.

I admit it will be another sleepless night. My body, my mind, and my spirit are all tired but eyelids wont close. They are stitched open, forever looking out to reality.I'm gonna rest my head on his chest, and hope love can sing me a lullaby till I fall asleep.

Sheriff Arpaio Forces Woman to Give Birth in Shackles

Sheriff Arpaio is known nation wide for his cruelty....here is one example of his inhuman actions :

It’s hard to imagine how Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio could possibly stoop any lower in his zeal to arrest and humiliate people who are, or look like, immigrants, whether they have legal status or not. But Arpaio, who is clearly challenged in the department of human decency and dignity, is at it again.

Telemundo 52, recently reported that Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio forced a pregnant Latina who went into labor while detained to give birth while shackled to the bed. After a reportedly brutal arrest, Alma Minerva Chacon, went into labor the same night of her arrest and was rushed to the hospital with her legs and hands chained.

The self-proclaimed “America’s Toughest Sheriff” is notorious for his racial profiling and brutal treatment of immigrants, including instituting chain gangs for females and juveniles, the introduction of pink underwear for male inmates, the parading of people in shackles to a segregated “tent city” in the Arizona desert, surrounded by electric fences.

World Aids Day!!!

"I want to wake up and graffiti the walls of my womb"

....yeah folks..hello good morning ( in Wordspit's voice ) lol

I should be finishing up my essay but I wanted to quickly blog about my performance last night @ the Fall Into Gender Show....I haven't perform in quite a while and I got the butterflies in my stomach right before I went up on stage. Thank God for my little brothers presence there (his image in the crowd calmed me down ).

So I performed this piece I wrote like 2 weeks ago and I thought I did an ok job ( I am my hardest critic )...but I was told after I performed that ppl where in tears because of the depth of the poem.....<----thats a new one for me. Touching someone to the point they are in tears, that made me feel good.

Overall I am very thankful for being given that opportunity to perform and also I am glad to have shared the stage with other dope artist. Star Jump Dance Collective ya rock!!!!
